About: The Inner Workings of Google Chrome
By runner • Sep 5th, 2008 • Category: ChromeBox, ResourcesThere is a serious sibling to the about:internets Easter Egg we discussed here in the last post. The about: command, entered in the Omnibox, allows you to delve into Google Chrome and its interactions with your computer and the wider internet.
Here is the full list of known commands and a description of what they do:
| about:stats | Vast array of data on performance, from V8 compilations to spell-checking lookups |
|---|---|
| about:dns | Logs efforts to improve responsiveness by prefetching data from visited sites |
| about:memory | Physical, shared, and virtual memory used by browsers and plug-ins |
| about:version | Google logo with version numbers of Chrome and AppleWebKit |
| about:histograms | Similar to about:stats but showing text-based histograms for certain parameters |
| about:network | Real-time performance monitoring of processes connecting to the network |
| about:plugins | Listing of installed plug-ins, whether active, and MIME types they handle |
| about:cache | Hyperlinked list of all files held in cache and their original URL |
| about:crash | Simulates a crash in Chrome |
| about:internets | Easter Egg: Screensaver called up from Windows |
| about:% | Danger: this actually crashes Chrome, not a simulation |
